A tummy tuck or mini tummy tuck flattens the stomach and can give women added confidence. The type of tummy tuck you should receive depends on the amount and location of fat and loose skin to be removed and tightened.
A mini tummy tuck addresses the ‘pooching’ of the lower belly and is primarily a muscle tightening procedure. It leaves a smaller and less noticeable incision line – at the bikini line. Skin is only removed and tightened below the belly button in the lower abdomen.
A full tummy tuck treats muscle separation and can tighten skin and remove excess fat across the whole abdomen. In addition to an incision site near the bikini line, a full tummy tuck will also leave behind some light scarring around the belly button, where the upper tummy is tightened and pulled. It can also remove stretch marks, which a mini tummy tuck cannot.
Which procedure is right for you? That depends on the location of your excess skin and fat. Mini tummy tucks are best for those with minor sagging between their belly button and pubic bone. Full tummy tucks are better suited for those whose skin and muscles have been stretched by obesity and for women with multiple pregnancies. Recovery time for a mini tummy tuck is approximately 1-3 weeks, and recovery for a full tummy tuck is 4 weeks with limited exercise for 6 weeks. Both types of tummy tucks are meant to be a permanent change; provided patients keep up with diet and exercise.
