What Is Breast Implant Removal?
Breast implants are not intended to be lifelong devices. As such, Dr. MaDan may recommend removing or replacing your implants every 10 to 15 years. However, some women experience discomfort, medical issues, or personal concerns and choose to have their breast implants removed before that time. A lot can change in 10 years, and some women may elect to change their appearance/aesthetic.
At BEYOND Collective, Dr. MaDan takes many measures to ensure natural-looking breast implant removal results. During your consultation, Dr. MaDan will listen to understand your concerns and will determine the appropriate breast implant removal techniques based on implant placement, age, imaging results, current breast size and shape, and skin quality.
Breast implant removal procedures are highly customizable and address each patient’s unique needs. Dr. MaDan will tailor your breast implant removal procedure and develop a unique procedural plan that may include rejuvenation procedures, such as breast lift or breast reduction, to restore the breast appearance.
Whether medical or aesthetic, there are many personal reasons patients consider breast implant removal surgery, including:
- Addressing discomfort or pain from hardened scar tissue
- Correcting implant-associated issues, including implant asymmetry, rippling, or malposition
- Resolving implant ruptures or leaks
- Improving implant-related health concerns
- Removing implants if large breasts no longer fit your aesthetic preferences
How Will My Breasts Look After Implant Removal Surgery?
After a breast implant removal, volume will decrease significantly, and patients who have larger implants may experience undesirable aesthetic changes than those with smaller implants. Breasts may appear deflated and saggy with loose skin that wrinkles. Patients may also experience nipples and areolas that point downward.
The appearance of your breasts after a breast implant removal will vary based on a few factors:
- Implant size
- Amount of natural breast tissue
- Scar tissue
- How long the implant has been in place
Oftentimes, a breast lift or a mastopexy can be performed at the same time as implant removal. The breast lift procedure allows for nipple repositioning and removal of excess skin, giving you a perky, lifted appearance without replacing an implant.

Preparing for a Breast Implant Removal in Nashville, TN
Before your Nashville breast implant removal surgery, it’s essential to be in good overall health. While each breast procedure will be unique, here is some general information to help you prepare.
• Stick to a consistent exercise program, and eat a healthy, well-rounded diet with plenty of protein to maintain your stable weight and avoid fluctuations.
• Stay well-hydrated before and after surgery.
• Visit your primary physician for an examination and appropriate testing to ensure you’re medically fit for surgery. For any person aged 40 and over, we require a baseline mammogram and routine labs, such as CBC, BMP/CMP, and EKG for anyone aged 50 or older.
• Stop taking medications, supplements, or vitamins that increase bleeding or bruising risks for at least two weeks before and after surgery. For example, avoid fish oil, garlic, ginseng, vitamin E, and ibuprofen or other anti-inflammatory medications.
• If you currently smoke, vape, or use nicotine products, you should quit, as smoking is detrimental to your overall health and recovery. Dr. MaDan requires that patients stop smoking at least 6 weeks before and after surgery and will perform a urine nicotine test on the morning of the procedure.
• Prepare your home and allow time in your schedule for recovery. Take adequate time off work, complete necessary chores and activities before surgery, and create a comfortable place to recover. It’s also helpful to freeze meals or set up a food delivery service. All necessary medications, supplies, and garments will be provided at your pre-operative appointment.
• Arrange for assistance. First, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home after your procedure and stay with you for at least 24 hours. You may also need help with household management, childcare, or pet care for a few weeks following surgery.
Nashville Breast Implant Removal Surgery Overview
On the night before surgery, avoid eating or drinking anything after midnight, and take necessary medications with small sips of water. Avoid wearing makeup, lotions, or deodorants, and remove all jewelry. Wear comfortable, loose clothing that is easy to put on after your procedure.
Review your paperwork to ensure your surgery location and arrival time. At check-in, you may need to provide identification and emergency contact information.
On the day of your procedure, you’ll meet with Dr. MaDan and your qualified anesthesia provider to review the details of your surgery and answer any final questions.
According to the procedural plan developed during your consultation, Dr. MaDan will begin your breast implant removal by making the appropriate incisions to remove your current implants and any necessary scar tissue. Typically, these incisions are along the lower breast crease or around the areola. Dr. MaDan will examine the natural breast tissue to assess for damages or changes. Often, a breast lift or mastopexy is performed at the same time as implant removal.
After the implants have been removed, Dr. MaDan will use dissolvable sutures to perform a meticulous multi-layer closure. She will cover the incisions with steri-strips that will remain in place until your first post-operative appointment.
Breast implant removal surgery typically takes 1 to 3 hours, depending on the individual characteristics of the procedure. Breast implant removal and mastopexy typically takes 3 hours.

Nashville Breast Implant Removal Recovery
• Breast implant removal surgery is an outpatient procedure, meaning you will go home the same day after surgery. Arrange for someone to drive you home from your procedure and help you with household tasks, including childcare or pet care, for a few days.
• For the first few days following your breast implant removal procedure, you may experience mild to moderate pain and feel tired and sore. It’s important to be prepared for mild bruising, swelling, numbness, and soreness across the chest. Swelling will obscure your final results but gradually subside over the next few weeks to months as your breast tissues settle. To alleviate your discomfort, Dr. MaDan may prescribe pain medications or recommend over-the-counter medications.
• After your breast implant removal, you will be fitted with a surgical bra to minimize swelling and support your breasts. You must wear your support garment at all times, except when showering, for 4 to 6 weeks. Dr. MaDan will advise you about wearing underwire bras following recovery.
• To protect your sutures and allow tissues to heal properly, avoid strenuous activities like exercise and heavy lifting for at least 6 to 8 weeks. Patients can resume light exercises like walking or riding a stationary bike within 2 weeks.
• Overall, the length of your initial breast implant removal recovery depends upon the extent of the procedure and your body’s healing abilities. Most patients need 1 to 2 weeks for initial recovery and will feel well enough to resume working in 7 to 10 days. You may return to work when you no longer need pain medications and can abide by Dr. MaDan’s restrictions.
How Soon Will I See My Breast Implant Removal Results?
Breast implant removal recovery and results are uniquely personal and depend on many factors, including the extent of the procedure, the implant size, scar tissue, and the quality and quantity of the remaining tissue. Some patients notice dramatic results immediately. However, patients should be prepared for swelling and bruising that may take several weeks to resolve and may obscure the final outcome. Residual swelling and healing may take up to a year.
Dr. MaDan takes every precaution to ensure your scarring is as minimal as possible. While scarring is most pronounced in the first few months, your incisions will begin healing and form a pinkish scar. It may take a year or more for the scar to mature and match your skin tone. The scar will never disappear entirely. Dr. MaDan will provide you with her medical-grade scar therapy regimen to optimize the appearance of your scars.
Following all post-operative instructions and maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine will help you maintain long-lasting results from your Nashville breast implant removal procedure.

Nashville Breast Implant Removal FAQs
Breast implant removal (without replacement) is always an option. Some patients may decide that implants just aren’t for them, or their preferences may have changed. In certain cases, saline implants may be amenable to removal in the office setting under local anesthesia. Silicone implants are usually removed under anesthesia in the outpatient surgery center. Usually, the capsule is left in place, so no drainage tubes or accessories are needed. When the capsule has to be removed, a drainage tube is left in place. Your natural tissues will remain intact, and some element of tissue tightening will occur over the 3 months after implant removal. Some patients undergoing implant removal will have a breast lift performed at the same time. This can be indicated when the nipple position remains ptotic or pointing downward after implant removal. With a breast lift after implant removal, all of your natural breast tissue is maintained. The excess skin is removed, and the nipple is repositioned to the most projecting part of the breast.
Breast implant removal does require an incision through your old scar to remove the implants. Pain can be expected any time an incision is made in the skin. Without implants, there is minimal muscle stretch on the pectoralis muscle.
Some breasts will return to their pre-surgery shape and position. However, this depends on many factors, including the size and shape of the prior implants, skin and tissue quality, age, genetics, and the duration of time the implants were in place. For breasts that have excess skin or that have significantly stretched after implant removal, a breast lift can be performed to reshape the breast and reposition the nipples. All of your natural breast tissue remains; only excess skin is removed from the lower pole of the breast.
While there is no diagnostic test to confirm BII, the most common symptoms are fatigue and brain fog. There is a high satisfaction rate of symptom resolution or improvement in BII patients after implant removal alone. However, there is no guarantee that implant removal will alleviate the symptoms of BII.
Breast implants can be removed at any time. In certain cases, like with Grade IV capsular contracture, pain may be the motivating factor to remove and not replace the implants. Capsular contracture has a high recurrence rate and may require multiple additional surgeries. In this scenario, implant removal will significantly improve quality of life and minimize the risk of recurrence and additional surgeries.
Breast implants can also be removed in light of breast implant illness (BII). Research studies have shown symptomatic improvement after implant removal. Removal of the capsule and implant has been shown to negatively affect the cosmetic outcome and does not improve patient satisfaction. “En bloc” capsulectomy is typically reserved for cancer treatments.
A ruptured silicone implant should be removed. A ruptured silicone implant can be found incidentally during an implant exchange procedure. In this scenario, the implant and all silicone would be evacuated from the breast pocket, and the ruptured implant should be returned to the manufacturer.
