Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty in Nashville with Dr. Olivia MaDan

Many women often feel self-conscious or embarrassed when it comes to talking about their most feminine areas.

Every woman’s labia has a unique appearance.  Some women are born with extra labia minora tissue, and some women experience changes to their labia during puberty, pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause. Functional issues, such as pain during intercourse or exercise, and cosmetic concerns about the appearance of their labia are primary complaints that may impact a woman’s confidence and self-esteem. Labiaplasty procedures help to rejuvenate the appearance and restore the function of the most intimate feminine area.

With a labiaplasty, you can reclaim your self-confidence by improving the appearance of the labia majora, labia minora, and clitoral hood. At BEYOND Collective, Dr. Olivia MaDan and our compassionate all-female staff are dedicated to helping you achieve your aesthetic goals and feel confident in your skin.

Are you interested in learning how labiaplasty can restore the appearance of the labia, improve your comfort, and renew your confidence? We are located in Nashville, TN, and proudly serve patients from the Nashville and Murfreesboro areas.

What Is a Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a procedure that removes excess skin of the prepuce (clitoral hood) and labia minora. The labia minora are the inner lips of the vaginal area, and the labia majora are the larger, hair-bearing outer lips. The clitoral hood or prepuce is a small piece of tissue that covers the clitoris. With an elongated labia minora, the minora tissue can be visible as it hangs below the labia majora.  This excess tissue can cause both functional and cosmetic concerns, such as pain during intercourse, exercise, or even tampon or menstrual cup use. Some women experience pulling or tugging from excess labia minora, leading to skin irritation and chafing during physical activities. A labiaplasty can correct all of these issues and improve the cosmetic appearance of the labia.

As one of Dr. MaDan’s most popular procedures, labiaplasty is highly customizable to address the function and appearance of the labia to meet the needs and aesthetic goals of each patient. At BEYOND Collective, Dr. MaDan knows that her labiaplasty results go far beyond addressing the cosmetic appearance of the labia. During your consultation, Dr. MaDan will ask questions to determine what you’d like to focus on, including which areas or activities cause you discomfort, to develop a surgical plan based on your health, anatomy, and aesthetic goals.

Benefits of labiaplasty can include:

  • Reduces chafing and other discomfort
  • May improve sexual satisfaction
  • Boosts self-esteem and confidence
  • Improve comfort during tampon or cup use
  • Eliminates visible labia minora when wearing tight-fitting clothing

Labiaplasty is a common procedure for women of all ages. Younger women may be candidates for a labiaplasty even if pregnancy is a plan for the future. They should be aware of possible recurrence secondary to hormones and childbirth. If you are considering labiaplasty after childbirth, it is recommended to wait 3 to 6 months after delivery to allow your body to heal. While labiaplasty will not impact your ability to become pregnant, future pregnancies may affect your results, requiring secondary procedures.

Labiaplasty Techniques

• The goal of a labiaplasty is to remove excess labia minora tissue that hangs below the labia majora. Some women experience texture and pigmentation changes to the hanging edge of the labia minora. The excess tissue is removed to improve symmetry and reduce symptoms like physical discomfort. As the anatomy of female genitalia is diverse, there are different labiaplasty techniques to achieve optimal results.

• A common labiaplasty approach is the “edge” or “trim” excision technique. This technique is more nuanced than its name allows. The trim technique removes the outer edge of the labia minora, leaving the lighter, smoother mucosal tissue shorter than the labia majora. Multiple layers of absorbable sutures are placed to create a smooth, tapered edge of the labia minora.  This technique creates an even-toned appearance by trimming the darker-colored portion of the labia.

• Another common approach is called a wedge resection. This technique removes a V-shaped wedge of labia minora and requires incisions on both sides. The wedge resection technique preserves the natural edge or border of the labia minora, which may be desirable for women without pigmentation or texture changes.

• Clitoral hood reduction can be performed with a labiaplasty. This procedure usually removes a diamond or crescent-shaped piece of tissue from the hood to maintain the balance between the prepuce and labia minora.

• A labia majora reduction procedure removes a slight crescent of skin from the inner portion of the labia majora. The amount of tissue removed depends on the amount of excess present.

• Stick to a consistent exercise program, and eat a healthy, well-rounded diet with plenty of protein to help you maintain your stable weight and avoid weight fluctuations.

• Stay well-hydrated before and after surgery.

• Visit your primary physician for an examination and appropriate testing to ensure you’re medically fit for surgery. For any person aged 40 and over, we require a baseline mammogram and routine labs, such as CBC, BMP/CMP, and EKG for anyone aged 50 or older.

• Stop taking medications, supplements, or vitamins that increase bleeding or bruising risks for at least two weeks before and after surgery. For example, avoid fish oil, garlic, ginseng, vitamin E, and ibuprofen or other anti-inflammatory medications.

• If you currently smoke, vape, or use nicotine products, you should quit. As smoking is detrimental to your overall health and recovery, Dr. MaDan requires that patients stop smoking at least 6 weeks before and after surgery. A urine nicotine test will be performed on the morning of your procedure.

• Prepare your home and allow time in your schedule for recovery. Take adequate time off work, complete necessary chores and activities before surgery, and create a comfortable place to recover. It’s also helpful to freeze meals or set up a food delivery service. All necessary medications, supplies, and garments will be provided at your pre-operative appointment.

• Arrange for assistance. First, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home after your procedure and stay with you for at least 24 hours. You may also need help with household management or childcare for a few weeks following surgery.

Nashville Labiaplasty Overview

Labiaplasty is most often performed in our office surgical suite under local and topical anesthesia. Labiaplasty can be combined with other procedures like a breast augmentation or tummy tuck under general anesthesia.

For in-office surgery under local anesthesia, you should eat and drink normally on the morning of surgery. For combination surgery under general anesthesia, do not eat or drink anything after midnight before your surgery. Necessary medications may be taken with a small sip of water. Avoid wearing makeup, lotions, or deodorants, and remove all jewelry. Wear comfortable, loose clothing that is easy to put on after your procedure.

Review your paperwork to ensure your surgery location and arrival time. At check-in, you may need to provide identification and emergency contact information. Depending on the extent of the procedure, labiaplasty surgery may take one to two hours.

On the day of your procedure, you’ll meet with Dr. MaDan to review the details of your surgery and answer any final questions. Patients undergoing labiaplasty in the office will have a topical anesthetic applied. Afterward, a local anesthetic will be injected for pain control and to minimize bleeding. Labiaplasty is often performed under local anesthesia with oral sedation; however, it may be performed under general anesthesia based on your unique needs.

Dr. MaDan will determine the right labiaplasty technique based on your anatomy and unique goals. She makes the appropriate incisions to remove excess skin and reshape the area, revealing a more youthful labia minora.

Dr. MaDan places multiple layers of dissolvable stitches to ensure a smooth, tapered edge of the labia that appears natural.  She will cover the incisions with ointment and dressings. Dr. MaDan will teach you how to keep the area clean to ensure your healthy recovery and optimal results.

Nashville Labiaplasty Recovery

• A labiaplasty is an outpatient procedure, meaning you will go home the same day after surgery. Arrange for someone to drive you home from your procedure and help you with household tasks, including childcare or pet care, for a few days.

• For the first 24 to 48 hours after a labiaplasty procedure, you may experience stinging, burning, or throbbing in the vaginal area, which will gradually subside. It’s important to get adequate rest and ice the treated area often in the first 72 hours; however, be mindful of sleeping and sitting positions to avoid stretching the tissues.

• You should expect mild bruising, swelling, temporary sensory changes, and tenderness around the labia. Dr. MaDan will prescribe pain medication to keep your discomfort manageable.

• To protect your sutures and allow tissues to heal properly, avoid strenuous activities like exercise and heavy lifting of more than 10 pounds. Patients can resume light exercises like walking within 2 weeks. Typically, patients are cleared to resume sexual intercourse and tampon use after 6 weeks.

• Labiaplasty recovery depends upon the extent of the procedure and the body’s healing abilities. Most patients need 1 week for initial recovery and can resume working at that time. Essentially, when you no longer need pain medications and can abide by Dr. MaDan’s restrictions, you can return to work.

How Soon Will I See My Labiaplasty Results?

After your labiaplasty, you will see immediate results although they will be masked by the initial swelling. Full recovery and final results can be seen approximately 6 to 12 weeks after labiaplasty surgery, depending on the extent of your procedure. During recovery, it’s important to be prepared for initial swelling and mild bruising. Residual swelling may take 4 to 6 months to completely resolve. Labiaplasty results are typically permanent; however, factors like aging, hormone changes, pregnancy, and vaginal birth may impact the longevity of the results.

While scarring is most pronounced in the first few months, your incisions will begin healing and form a pinkish scar. Dr. MaDan typically makes labiaplasty incisions in inconspicuous natural creases. She will provide you with her medical-grade scar therapy regimen to optimize the appearance of your scars.

Following all post-operative instructions and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help you maintain long-lasting plastic surgery results from your Nashville labiaplasty.
